Coolest photo of ME

Coolest photo of me was made possible by these kind gentlemen.

As a photographer I absolutely dread being in front of the camera, I’m made to be behind it not in front of it. But as soon as I saw these guys and the amazing morning light shinning over Angkor Wat I just had to jump on the other side of the camera.

More photos from Cambodia coming soon.

Chasing the dream

2016 – Thank You. 2016 you were an amazing year for me.
Photographically I didn’t shoot much, I didn’t accomplish a lot, I left so much on the table… but 2016 you were an amazing year.

Photography is something I do for fun; my therapy to keep my sanity. However, its also a dream of mine to have my work published, to be dawn the pages of a magazine or see my work on a billboard would truly be amazing. The reality is I also have a day job… which at times gets in the way. But the goal more than ever in my life is to completely change that for 2017.

This blog, this website is going to be focused more on documenting my journey throughout 2017 rather than creating images; I hope you tag along throughout what I hope will be an adventure filled 2017.

So even though I left so much on the table in 2016, I’m certainly going into 2017 hungry…. hungry to capture the light.

Street Photography.

When I first starting taking the old family Nikon camera on trips, I was never really interested in photographing the normal tourist photos. You know standing in front of some famous store on Rodeo Dr, or at the Welcome to Hawai’i sign that you pass by as you take the escalator to baggage claim. No, I was always interested in taking photos of the people I saw walking around and the things might normally go unseen but for some reason they caught my attention. I’ve been holding on to some of these images for sometime now, while others are fresh.

Some of these I’ve shared on Instagram, while others have been completely hidden to the publics eyes…. until now.

Design exercise

An exercise in design.

Branding-4Branding-3

I’ve been playing around with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for sometime now and often refer to myself as a “frustrated designer”. And once in awhile I’m able to create something pretty damn cool. To two designs you see above, are two interpretations of my logo’s.

Recently I’ve been inspired by numerous poly-low style of design and wanted to create something similar. This was my first attempt at poly-low style work and wasn’t sure how to go about it, luckily I found some great inspiration over at Behance.net

The first design above is with my MK (Michael Kalbo) logo, this design took me about an hour and the thought behind the process, was to create something simple, using medium size triangle and medium length line segments within the letters MK.

While in the second design I used my original KALBO logo; I decided to use small and intricate line segments to create the polygons. The second design took a lot more time that I expected, simply because I created each and every line segment by hand, which took a couple of hours.

The most difficult part of the process of the entire design process was determining a simple, bright, playful color combination that had a classical look and feel to it. I went through about 50+ color combinations before I was completely satisfied.

I’m absolutely in love with the first design and so much so that I’m be sending it out to be printed and framed.

Enjoy.

El Nido Palawan Philippines

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of visiting El Nido in the province of Palawan in the Philippines. The Philippines is filled with so many amazing islands, breathtaking views and glorious sunrise/sunsets. Here’s a perfect example of that. My view from the cottage.

Enjoy.
